The majority of the cobalt mined is a byproduct of copper and nickel mines as the element is commonly found tied up with those two ores. Only 2% of global production actually comes from a mine specifically for cobalt. People seem to be happy to tie cobalt production to the Congo, but fail to connect the dots that a lot of copper comes from there as well. The Congo produced 2.2 millon tonnes of copper in 2022 while netting 130,000 tonnes for the same year. Roughly 80% of their cobalt comes from copper ore.
