Buhl, ID | Technician here and I do a lot of the small backyard herds your size. I definitely agree you need to get in touch with an experienced technician ahead of time. If you're able to see natural heats is best but that doesn't work well if you have a day job that keeps you away from home all day. If you can't watch for natural heats your other option is synchronization. Standard ovsynch works well in my experience. 2cc Gnrh, wait 7 to 10 days then Lutalyse, wait 3 days and breed with Gnrh. CIDRs will increase the conception rate slightly but not enough to justify the cost imo. Don't let them sell you high priced semen right away because you want to know how well this works for you the first year. Plenty of good bulls under $10 on the beef-on-dairy list at any company.
