Central Minnesota | I’ve use AI on a small herd of beef cattle (15-20 head) the last 6 years. I use a heat synch protocol and time AI the whole herd once, then cleanup with a bull. I’ve averaged anywhere from 50-100% conception to AI (the 100% will be this year if the vet was correct on the dates.) I have done cleanup AI breeding but it takes a lot of time with beef cattle as you have to, check for heats (I use the Estrotech patches), catch them and get all of your AI equipment ready, etc. I always figure breeding 1 cow for AI cleanup took an extra hour unless the cattle are right at home. With that being said I’m probably going to do 100% AI this year as bull rental prices are through the roof ($1200).
You’ll need a good chute for the beef cows.
I learned how to AI in college and worked on a large dairy farm where I did a lot of breeding. If I were you I would hire an AI tech if possible. | |
