Subject: RE: Modernizing cemetery grave site maps?

Chebanse, IL.....

Find A Grave is good. But, it relies on someone that has had the time to enter the grave site and corresponding information. A local friend of ours spent a few years  intensively searching our local cemeteries and recording his findings. He would often contact surviving family members for correct information. He was truly dedicated to the project following his retirement from his normal work.

Sadly, he passed away a couple of years ago and no one else has stepped up. So, point is, it's a good site but it takes a lot of time and work at cemeteries & research to make it right.

Here's his own "Find A Grave" entry....

I
would also like to add that it's been very hard for us to locate all the military veterans graves at Chebanse. There are 347 of them in our cemetery as of this year. But, finally one of our American Legion members spent days at the cemetery creating a new database/map with specific instructions on where the graves are located. We place flags on all veterans graves every Memorial Day. Seems it would be easy, but some of the grave markers are 150+ yrs old and have sunken, tipped,  or are almost untotally unreadable due to stone aging. Another member has started re-aligning old grave markers and putting concrete bases under them. One has to remember that many of those veterans may have no family left, or none in the area. So, there is no one to care for the grave except for a group like our American Legion post.
