De Forest, WI

swne - 5/13/2023 08:35 Over applying fertilizer and letting get into the groundwater supply. Applying fertilizer on frozen ground and having it run off. Don't kill me but I really question fertilizing in the fall.

Fertilizing in the fall would be planting vetch, clover and cereal rye.  Let it grow for a while in fall and spring and terminate for the fixed nitrogen.  You have a cover, nutrient scavaging via the Rye and nitrogen fixation due to the vetch and clover.
