Running someone else’s cattle for free doesn’t sound like a very promising start to anything.

Given your unique situation, I think you should get meat sheep instead of cattle. They are safer for the kids, won’t damage the chain link (and the chain link will be much better than other fences at keeping them safe from predators), and if they happen to get out on the road and someone hits one, both the dent in the car and the chances of a lawsuit will be much smaller. You can use some simple electric fence to divide the 25 acres or to run them outside the chain link during the day. When the kids are a little older get a few calves and go from there.
