Wisconsin | Use a thermometer to see if the soil is warm enough. or the old test is drop your drawers and sit down for a couple minutes, you'll KNOW if it's ready. Corn like any grass loves nitrogen, especially once it gets going, then it will want a lot of water to. Corn can move huge amounts of water out of the soil in hot dry conditions. The other warning since you're in MT, what's the ph? and how does corn do with that ph and your soil fertility.
Irrigation right after planting will do a lot to make up for less a less than ideal planter, if the conditions need it.
