NW Missouri
I got a credit card in high school (late 90s) when I started driving and was out in the world on my own more often. As long as you are disciplined enough to not buy anything you can't afford and pay it off every month, they're a great tool. It was in my name too, not tied to my parents, which helped build my credit.

I haven't balanced my checkbook in over 20 years, but I could if I thought it was worth the trouble (it's not). We have a decent enough idea what is in our personal and farm accounts, and we rarely write checks anyway except for big ticket items.

I recently started paying the bills for some elderly family members that are getting to the point that they need some assistance. They've never had a computer and pay everything with checks. I've written more checks in the last couple months for them than I have in the last 5 years for myself. What a PITA. Just generational differences in how we do things.
