| I think to some extent it depends on your own financial circumstances. You are correct in your belief that takeout does not involve the same extent of service as a sit-down meal. I don't think a certain percentage is even required. If the server is actually taking the order versus say an online order, I'd "tip" a bit more esp. if the server is taking several meals on one order. Remember, while they're taking and processing your takeout, they aren't making any tips serving those at a table. If they're working as a "hostess," it's possible they're already earning a higher hourly wage than tipped servers.
Regardless, I can't imagine too many wait staff get rich working in a restaurant. Giving them a buck or two, maybe 5 for a larger order would, I think, make them feel appreciated, which I think could be worth even more than the $$$. | |
