Subject: Know of anyone thinking of getting new windows? A little heads-up info

Thumb of Michigan
We are the Government; we are here to help.

Such almost famous words. I’ll attach the documentation from the EPA & Department of Energy, regarding version 7, requirement date, plus a couple of brand name manufactures request to delay the implementation date which is October 23, 2023.

If you know of anyone that's thinking of purchasing new windows, tell them to do it real soon. If price of windows is important to them.

Now to the long “Cliff notes version”.

I have a nephew involved in window manufacturing. He told me that if I or anyone I knew was planning on purchasing windows do so quickly (at least by late summer, September 1 even). All windows sold after 10/23/2023 have to meet Energy Star version 7 (EPA attachment page 8). If you don’t want to read any farther, just think $$$$ out of window buyer’s pocket.

His company has 4 window manufacturing plants, one produces 3.200 windows a day even. The majority of their windows presently produced WILL NOT pass the new ES version 7 standards (as well as most other manufactures). And they only produce windows for the lower 3 zones of the US. They don’t produce windows for the Northern region (which probably most of us are in, see page 9 of EPA attachment). Whereas the big boys, (that I’ll attach a couple of their letters to the EPA) do make windows for all 4 zones.

This mandated ES version 7, is going to drive the window prices much higher. The northern zone windows will all be most likely triple paned windows. The extra Argon (plus purer) and it’s more difficult/time consuming application method used in manufacturing will be costlier. Plus, the more expensive glass/other materials that have to be used, is all going to be factors driving an increase in window cost. Which naturally, will be passed on to the customer.

So, if I can help one Ag Talker, save a few bucks, think I’m doing OK. If you or anyone you know plans on buying windows do so BEFORE October 23, 2023. Actually, most likely before that, because October 23, 2023, is the last day ES non-version 7 can be SOLD. What day each manufacture is going to quit producing ES non-version 7 is up to the manufacturer.

The government's reason for doing this, windows usually consume about 10% of a home's surface area. That are loses about 35-45% of the heat (see Depart of Energy attachment).

We’re the government; we’re here to help, empty your pocket.

Don't shoot me, I'm just a Messager.
