Back when I did such things that is what I would do. Wear my regular work boots then pull on buckle up overshoes over them. Yes, they are heavy, but they work and the feet at least stay mostly comfortable. Plus in very cold weather they keep the feet warmer with the extra insulation.

Now days I do have some just pull on rubber boots when I need to do something around the ponds that involve wetness, but I never wear them for very long at a time.
