I had a aunt that had it done due to infection caused by the joint itself. She spent a couple months laying on a hospital bed with a spacer while they proceeded to get things sorted out.
When I had a spacer in to replace my knee I used a walker for a week. Then moved on to crutches, than a cane and walked into the operating room without anything. But I was in my 50’s then.
