South Texas | It can get started when water sits in there for too long, like if this shop/school sits unused for a month or so. You need to get bleach into the heater somehow, like unscrew the anode and pour it in, then let the water run to each hot water faucet until you smell the chlorine. Give it an hour or so and then flush it out.
If it comes back quickly, you’ll need some sort of continuous treatment. There are salts for water softeners that seem to help. I think they’re marketed for iron removal, but it seemed to help with the stink.
Otherwise, need to add chlorine or peroxide to the water supply and then a charcoal filter. Works best when the oxidizer is given time to work before filtered out. So if you can put the injection in the pump house and the filter in the shop/school, it’s better than them both being in the same closet. | |
