Subject: RE: Question for Canadians only.

Melancthon, Ontario
I must confess to being fairly ignorant of the nuts and bolts of how it all works financially. I just hand the hospital my ontario health card and that takes care of it. Ive had a health card my whole life, it renews every 5 years with my drivers license and i renew them both at a Service Ontario. Someone getting $1000 a week gross pay will give 150-200 of that for income tax. How much goes to healthcare im not sure.

Overall im happy with the system. Emergency room wait times arent a big deal in small towns. Cities its a big problem because theres a bunch of people injured in violence, plus a bunch of bums just whining about a stiff neck. I was in a bad accident and was rushed straight to a CT machine to see if i had a broken neck. Neck was fine but had a temperal bone broken. They monitored that pretty closely and had me back for monthly CT scans to make sure it healed. I have been deaf in my left ear since then, and have been getting sent to specialists to try and correct that. The specialist thing has been frustrating as you basically have to jump when they say no negotiation. Going to surgery on that ear Dec 1, im almost done corn and wanted to leave it for the new year but if i said no i would be back at the start of the waiting list Id already been on for 9 months. But at least they are getting to me and its free.

Biggest issues i have with our system is that the smokers, 500lbs-ers and alcoholics get money dumped into themselves for preventable stuff. Also lots of welfare bums trying to get a doctor to say they have an injury they can sue for.

I notice the folks I know personnally who complain the most about the system are over 80. I think we have a lot of "new canadian" healthcare workers and their english is poor at best which aggravates folks. My grandparents have pretty unrealistic expectations of the system and i seriously think they'd both have passed a decade ago if they had to pay every time they darkened the hospital door. Grandpa is diabetic and is CONSTANTLY not taking his insulin or eating on time and has been taken by ambulance many times. They live on a mountain that is a challenge for young people, in the winter the paramedics tie a rope to the gurney and lower him down the driveway. He got a bill for $40 for an ambulance ride and he threw a fit.

2 of my peers from highschool went into medicine and they both practice in the US, as they said the starting sallory was double. So that part of the system is bad for sure, its hard to expect med students to want to practice here when they can have the same standard of living, basically the same culture, and get paid way more.
