I’d say your hypothesis is correct. Tower silos have confined spaces and low airflow when the blower isn’t running. We deal with it every year but it’s not usually more than a nuisance. We also run the blower and open the roof door whenever we are filling to encourage fresh air as much as possible.

Have seen it so bad some years, looking up the chute the air is yellow. Have seen it rolling out of the bottom of the chute and dissipating out into the barn on cold mornings as well but not for many years. The better the grain yield, the less gas there seems to be.
