Subject: RE: Phantom Corn Yield loss

Central IL
NEIAAG, you see the same yield loss we have seen over the last 40 years. We clear off the duff and count the kernals on the ground behind the combine and the yield loss is not coming from harvest loss with the exception of after inclement weather. Possibilities include more kernal tips broke off in the cobb, gasing off during dry down, leaking back into the cobb past the black layer, or who knows what else. There absolutely is a significant loss during dry down. Phantom loss seems like the right name for it to me, but folks can call it whatever they want.
