| When you plugged the ethernet cable into your laptop, suddenly your printer has two different ways to talk to the network - both wireless and through the network cable, even though the ethernet cable is going to your laptop.
I agree with a previous reply - the answer lays within your IP config.
Check your network settings on your laptop by clicking on the wireless icon in the lower right corner of your screen (sys tray). Then look at your "details." In particular you want to write down four things:
IPv4 address - can vary, but many MIGHT by default be 192.168.1.???
IPv4 subnet mask - should be 255.255.255.0
IPv4 DHCP - needs to be in the same subnet as the address above - likely to be 192.168.1.1 -
IPv4 Gateway - very likely will be the same as the DHCP address.
Now, check your printer's wireless settings. The numbers MUST BE THE SAME, EXCEPT the IPv4 address. It should have the same 192.168.72, but the last one/two or three digits must be different.
This would give you a start do diagnose.
The IP address MUST have the same first three groups of numbers as the Gateway. The Gateway is where your network reaches out to the internet. If your IP address is different than the Gateway, your laptop/printer doesn't know how to get out to the world.
