Not knowing his story but responding with some scenarios I have seen.
Older generation retires and has to much taxable income. They are hoping to sell the grain after they take their forced distribution from investment. They pass before that happens.
Also I have seen the farmer just can not quit. If they sell the last of their corn they are officially done. It gives them a reason to watch the markets.
Imagine if you remember selling corn for .80 a bushel and just want to say you sold $8.00 corn.
I have also seen them forget they had corn.
I once spent a whole day at a grain elevator calling older folks that had forgotten they had corn there. It was a shame as the storage was more than the grain was worth. The elevator was more than fair though as they paid the folks that agreed to sell the grain some. I don't know how the ones that wanted to keep it came out.
There is a reason some of the coops bill monthly for storage.
