The original General Electric water heater in my house lasted over 50 years.

On the same water, the replacement A. O. Smith heater is leaking and blowing fuses at 5 years.

This is nuts. Every house appliance fails now in short order and it is grossly uneconomical to replace them with the same junk over and over.

Any suggestions for a brand name of electric water heater that will have a life expectancy like the old General Electric? Or are they a thing of the past?

I have a plastic Marathon water heater that is controlled by the electric co-op on peak electric days. Over 30 years old. No issues.

Mine is 23 years old, same deal, haven’t even thought about it.

The one it replaced was a cast iron, I think only the element went bad, it was very old, the coop deal on the Marathon was cheaper than elements on that cast iron one would have been....

They might be turning the heater off again in the near future as our energy network falls apart. They only really controlled the heater for 3 years or so when it was installed, never needed to since.
