We currently milk her every couple days and the first week after the calf is born we milk daily to get the udder stabilized since the calf doesn't drink that much. We usually take 1 1/2 gallons each time. Could take more but then she just produces more and you can have problems. Once the calf gets older then you can take more too. When the calf gets to 2 months we pull the calf off overnight when we want to milk to let the udder accumulate. We currently have 3 Jerseys in production and we'll probably go back to milking all 3 once a week now that this calf is a couple weeks old. We use a Surge belly milker. We've been doing this for 8 years and it really works far better than I ever thought it would. Like you, this was the wife's idea but I really enjoy it. We drink it raw and my wife makes a lot of cheese as well. Good luck and I hope you make your wife happy. |
