Subject: RE: Corn pollination and heat

Jackson County, AL

We're going through the same.  Looking at some Thursday and Friday, the heat two weeks ago hurt it but the cooler temps, especially at night helped.  Rep showed us how to peel the husk back and see if the silks fell off.  If they stay stuck, that's grain didn't pollinate and there's a 100 or so per ear that didn't or 30 bushels gone if we get rain from here on.  We don't know what an agronomist knows and it's interesting but as I told him it really does us no good to know because we can't change anything either way.  If we had irrigation it would have gotten water but since we don't it's out of our control.  Putting fungicide, insecticide, and a foliar on about half the corn next week to hopefully help with stress.  If it doesn't pay we're only out the cost of the helicopter and we're reimbursed for the product.
