It actually depends on your needs.The further the spacing the larger the ears.Really close and you will usually have tip fill issues.I once (way back) did a very close spacing,,maybe 40,000 ,error in thinking,,ended up with this beautiful looking field of tassels,,watched as it was horrible weather for 10 days,,very few ears formed.
