I have no irrigation experience, but strictly from an agronomy standpoint if you keep them from stressing to.the point of losing turgor pressure and having lazy leaves, I don't think you'll need to help them along much until fill.
Get it figured out in case I get a reservoir built and can irrigate in the next few years.
