Subject: RE: $70 barley

NW Washington
Beer is made mainly using "malted" barley which is a somewhat tricky process of sprouting the barley and then stopping the growth and drying the grain. This is to get the starches in the grain to turn into sugars so they can be then made into alcohol. And there are various techniques and malting processes to get the flavor for different types of beer. Brewing barley users and buyers are very fussy about how the barley and big buyers like Busch, Miller, and even Modelo have brewing barley grown under contract in south Idaho under irrigation where they have better control of the growing conditions. And the company field man calls the shots while it is growing.
I see local craft brewers using bagged malt from the UK and Germany in addition to some grown and processed in this area.
Go talk to a local craft beer brewer and have a pint or two while you sort out this beer, barley, and malt stuff.
Anyway, feed barley is not hard to grow, but growing good quality brewing barley is a tougher task.
