If the only issue is it getting rough, say from tire tracks or burrowing critters, staying shallow with the tillage shouldn't hurt it too much.

A healthy population of earthworms won't get wiped out by one shallow tillage pass especially if they are below it, might upset them a little, but they won't just pack up and leave.
