Southern MN in the pothole between the hills | Here's a general list of red flag phrases I have compiled in my years of buying machinery. Let these guide you through your next purchase:
"Field ready"
"Fresh paint"
"Freshly serviced"
"Fresh overhaul"
"Fresh oil change"
"Doesn't burn a drop of oil"
"No oil leaks"
"Like brand new"
"Won't last long at this price"
A listing including any of these phrases should be viewed with extreme scepticism. The only thing worse than a listing with one of these phrases, is when it's in all caps.
If you're not a wrench turner prepared to take a gamble on an auction or tractor jockey shyster machine, then look for equipment being sold by the actual owner. 15 minutes on the phone with the person that actually owned and maintained (or not) the machine they're trying to sell is usually enough time to determine if it's something worth going to look at.
