Southern Illinois | I shared in a previous post that one of our front planter lift wheels got bent while pulling our splitter through a ditch. We got it straightened and strengthened and finished planting with it, but it got me wondering if I would be happier if I took an 8 row planter and cut it down to 4 rows but still had 4 wheels to spread the weight out on. When fully loaded (I had to be to get enough down pressure to penetrate the hard ground) as I was backing into corners on hillsides it was really making the front planter wheels squat to one side. I'm not sure if I need to invest in heavier rims and tires and keep what I have or invest in an all around heavier planter. Is the lift system on an 8 row worth dealing with. I hear it can be a bear sometimes. I'm open to any suggestions. TIA
P.S. The front planter will stay a 4 row no matter what so I can offset the splitter next year and do Twin row corn. We are still on wide rows 38" on center.
