Subject: RE: 313 New holland vs 1393 Massey ferguson Discbine

NC Indiana
Ran a new 313 for 5 years and just went to 1393 start of last year.

1393 - better cutterbar so far. Stronger and no shear hubs, which we broke a few per year on the 313. The 313 was a good bar for the first 2 seasons and then modules started shearing bolts that hold them together and to the spine, and we were always trying to keep them fixed after that. Ended up putting the next size bigger in to hold them to the spine better. That helped. If you shear them in the modules they can be a pain to get out.
1393 also seems to cut cleaner and has 4 height settings instead of 3. Knives equally easy to change on both with the OEM tool. 1393 knives seem to last longer and dirt cheap at our dealer ($2.60).
1393 has hydraulic roll pressure which is better than the 313 mechanical pressure system. We put BD rolls in the 313 and had to try to shim it to get enough pressure. Honestly the OEM New Holland rolls seemed to work the best until one got a bend in one somehow. Have steel in the 1393 and don't love their crimping. Will probably change them to BD rolls at some point.
1393 has a stronger frame, we had some issues with the 313 frame cracking. Not sure why. Don't see that happening with the V frame on the 1393.

313 has much better swath control, we can't find the sweet spot for width on the 1393. Either too wide and running it over or 2' narrower than tires. But the 313 swath boards kept breaking, the 1393 won't have that issue.
313 cutterbar is easier to service, which you will probably do often if you put many acres on it. Not hard to do once you know the tricks. Make sure you use top quality bearings in the modules (SKF/Timken).
313 wheels are inset better, the 1393 tires are a hair wider than the machine and knocks hay over. If you aren't coming back the opposite direction it's streaky.
313 is mechanical drive all the way to cutterbar. 1393 uses a belt. Haven't had problems yet but I'd rather have mechanical drive if I could pick. Did have to replace the 313 driveline clutch once.

1393 is much easier to keep clean, doesn't hold gunk in all the crevices like the 313.

As always your dealer service should be considered. 313 was a good mower and we ran it hard to be fair. We'd give the 1393 a little better rating but it doesn't have near the acres yet that the 313 did. I think they both come with 3 year cutterbar warranties now.
