Subject: RE: Alternator for JD 4045 power unit engine

Faunsdale, AL
I looked up the alternator used on the 5420 tractor and it doesn’t look like it is the full sized Bosch. That’s as I remembered since I always try to put a 10SI DELCO on everything I can.

As I remember it, there just isn’t room for the larger frame alternator under the hood, so I got one from one of the aftermarket suppliers. They are either a 40 amp for open station tractors or a 60 amp for cab equipped models.

What your power unit came with is an open question.

I have swapped a Bosch large frame alternator for a 10SI Delco before. As others have said, not a difficult swap on a machine that has the standard single large output and 2 wire regulator wiring harness. The pulley for the serpentine belt swapped from the Bosch to the DELCO without any difficulty as I remember it.
