How does a STS combine "identify" the connected header?

Hopefully the above link helps you. As far as your questions about "How does the combine know what head it is connected to?" It is my understanding that there are certain extra pins in the single point connector that identify the head to the combine. I don't know how many wires are involved but using just two pins could give several combinations. For example if Pin A is grounded but B is 12V, , Pin A is 12V but Pin B is grounded, Both Pins A & B are 12V., Both Pins A & B are grounded. Maybe 3 pins are used which would give even more combination codes to the combine.

I'm not positive if the combine picks up this information as soon as the head is changed or if the engine has to be shut down and then restarted. I think my 9770 picks up the change without shutting down.
