| I figure that you should pay no more then what 2 average feeder calves can pay for, my other rule is to buy from someone that treats them worse then you do. unless you buy a whole herd form someone quitting don't buy too many from anyone place, that way not putting your eggs all into one basket if they do not work under your management. I have kind of swore off of buying heifers, too long for a return and it seems like a certain of your own heifers do not last more then a few years and less yet of the ones you buy. This all being said I broke the first rule today, bought 3 cow calf pairs from a couple I have bought bulls form over the years, one with a bull at the side which will be my heifer bull next year, other 2 have heifers and hope to get a bull next year out of one of the 3 for the following year's heifer bull.
