I've said it before and I'll say it again, no matter how many people disagree. Some online auction terms notify you that the seller has access to your max bid, so they can bid up to the max bid. Not all can, not all do. Also, many will say they can't control shill bidders etc. but they don't allow it, then you sell with them and the buyback setting is a fraction of the sale commission, meaning they're giving you a break for bidding your own stuff.

Now, I don't expect the local DA or the state licensing agency to care if an auctioneer is running the bids on some sawzalls. I do expect a transparent marketplace, if that means we admit online auctions do this, then fine.
