Subject: RE: Retirement

Glenwood, Mn
Wife and I own 360 acres. We rent another 240. I have three thriving businesses in town besides the farm. Farm takes half the time, other three have good managers and take the other half. Farm accounts for 20% of the net income. Kids are 10, 8, and 5. I talked to my neighbor who is my age about renting. Seems good to me financially. Uncle who is my landlord says no way, you quit now, you get no shot at buying me out the rest of the way. I thought that only happens with dads and sons?

Anyways, when’s the right time? I have no idea.! My dad and I don’t get along because he didn’t know when to quit and now it affects his relationship with his grand kids. I think it’s like marriage. When you know, you know.

My only reservation is if I quit now, I only have the land base we have. We started with 0 and worked to here. I would hate to see my kids go through the struggles the wife and I did/do. At the same time, it will sure toughen them up and make them smarter. Where do you draw the line?
