I think the decision of final quitting and retiring is a personal thing.

If you are healthy and able AND still enjoying it why not just cut back and still plant a crop?

I am in my upper 70ies and still cropping half our land.
Hire things done that I used to do myself as machinery wore out and I did not replace like sprayer and some of my planting, although I run the neighbours machine to do some of my planting and I run it on some of his ground while he and his son are busy with combine and trucking
Let the neighbour rent the other half.

Was talking to an acquaintance who farms 10 kms from me in the spring.
He is in his 80ies and is still farming half his land and has rented the other half same as I have.
I know another man who is the same age, 80 some years, and as far as I know he still farms his ground but likely hires some work done now like combining and spraying.
Neither of them have kids returning to the farm and we are the same that way.

So I have not retired yet,
Semi retired and the semi part gets a little less each year.

I gave up snow removal this past winter so a little more 'retired' and a little less 'semi'

Not sure when I will quit.
Rebuilding my old corn planter with parts off another old planter I picked up at a sale so will have to plant some corn again next year to make use of it.
