Dig a hole and see if it fills with water, a neighbor has a field where the highest spot in the field is always wet and can leave ruts at harvest in a dry fall. Of course your average rainfall year would be too wet for us so also a factor as scouring rush has gone from a novelty weed here to an issue during our 25 year wet cycle.
