The first 5 collars sluff there leaves off. When you get to corn shoulder high the first leaf you see will most likely be #6. You need to slice open stalk to count accurately.

Once it gets big enough I think it's easier to count backwards from v18. Counting out from tassel that's still hidden inside.

V8 corn will be from 2-3' tall on 90% of the years.
