I've broadcast alfalfa and clover together on wheat on one of the last days of winter where the ground is frozen hard enough to drive on. Clover catches really well. Alfalfa not quite as much so. Well enough that I see value in mixing some with the clover but I'd probably be disappointed with it by itself.
