Western Oregon | When they built Highway 22 west of the Willamette river they dug pits for the rock. Left some nice irrigation ponds along side the highway. There is a big river rock operation in the same area. There is/was a limestone pit near me, they used it to build the Polk County courthouse and some other buildings. They also hauled it out by railroad to Portland Or for Portland cement. Some great fishing now. I have built a lot of miles of road digging out of gravel bars on the Little Luckiamute river way back straightening the riverbed with a 977 Cat loader with a side dump bucket. Lot of ditches and dikes with a road on top of the dike to stop flooding....James
