Subject: RE: Any dairyman going away from alfalfa?

Southwestern IL
We haven’t grown alfalfa in 6 or 7 years. We’ve switched to chopping triticale, rye and/or wheat every spring.

Pros: We sow after corn silage, chop in the spring, then plant beans…No dedicated acres to alfalfa=more acres for row crop=more cash flow.

Cons: Spring weather can make it difficult to cut, and harvest in a timely manner for best feed quality. It also adds that much more work to an already busy season.

But overall, the cows don’t miss the alfalfa and neither do we.
