Subject: RE: Chloride - calcium or magnisuim (Dust Control)

central - east central Minnesota -

holstein farmer - 6/19/2022 07:10 I sprayed around our hog barns earlier this spring hoping to kill them for the rest of the year. Well they didn’t die like I hope they would. Does anybody have any recommendations on what to use to kill weeds year around? Would like to only spray once a year. Any advice I’d greatly appreciated. TIA.

If you what something that'll kill year long and keeps dust down and is a germ killer - Dust Control calcium or magnesium chloride. Generally, about a half gal per sq yard should do it. Chlorides do not move much at all, once they are attached to the soil partial. Rains help to reactivate it for more killing longevity. Rodents do not like it on their paws/feet. But, they do like to lick it (all rodents and other animals).

ETA: relatively inexpensive compared to weed control chemicals . . .  about a buck a gal. There are different concentrations of dust control - I prefer 30% - 33% solution.
