Great strategy. Know of someone that successfully used an approach like this for a few years then a few “elite” parents found a way to bench him so their sons could get more playing time. IMO the worst scenarios are when those parents find a way to coach into JrHS and HS, especially in football.

We supported our children in travel gymnastics and baseball which included both very bad and exceptionally good experiences. Three of them made their own choice to discontinue the travel circuit by their sophomore year and moved onto other sports and interests where they had more control of their destiny such as track, golf, art and 4-H leadership. The last one found catching to be that leadership position where coaches couldn’t overlook his ability to impact the game. Going into his sophomore year at college he’s faced with the choice of continuing or not because of his bat. He rarely puts the ball over the wall and that’s what D1 is looking for today for positions other than pitchers.

Guess my point is that mixing in some travel experience is good for leadership if you sort through organizations with parent and administration issues ahead of joining. More coaches should follow a strategy like that of the OP at least through 7th or 8th grade when true sports talent and leadership begins to express itself.
