West Central Wisconsin | I didn't read the other responses to this but here's my take.... the days of the small farms that the owner knows every animal by name are nearly gone. Take myself for an example. I see 1800+ calves a year go through my calf facility. Each one is a number on an eartag and computer spreadsheet. Do I care about them? Yes I do. But if I got worked up every time something unexpected happens in my barns, I'd be insane. Further, the more animals you have, the greater the chances that odd stuff will occurr and sometimes on a large scale. Unfortunately economics of the cattle industry have made it this way. Ultimately, yes.... they are a commodity that I raise to help increase the bottom line. | |
