North Central Illinois | I can't speak for Bryan, but I'll run a hoe that deep on occasion. I usually reserve that level of brutality for a hail Mary situation where I feel that I'm behind the curve due to earlier excessive rain and my other option is to tear it out and replant due to too many weeds. Generally I can get in with the hoe a few days earlier than fit conditions for replant. So far, every time I've brutalized the beans, by the time it is fit to replant the beans have recovered enough that I can clean it up with the cultivator. My best farm average yield came in one of those years.
Those who claim a hoe can't kill emerged weeds are those who have only run a hoe the way the manufacturer intended.
