Yup, I was in the same spot a few years ago. Rotten barn where I wanted to put a new cattle shed.
My wife told me I should let my then 90 year old mother know my intentions before demolishing the barn in case she would feel hurt at the loss of an old family landmark.
After I told her Mom was quiet for just a moment, then she said, "Should have done that in 1952."
