western iowa,by Denison | from my experience it's hard to keep a growing momma heifer gaining when nursing also-either split the heifers from the cows or wean-your 1st calf heifer is at about 80% body weight breed that young-you do not want that heifer to back up-so if you supplement feed the heifer pair that would be awesome-I know it takes more work-still that heifer will need some supplement of roughage ration if weaned and running with other cows-something in tune of soyhull pellets-etc..-I personal would figure out a way to supplement as I would want to keep the pair together on grass.
If not able to separate, I would not be opposed to adding soyhull pellets to the whole cow group-with 300-400# calves they will learn to eat with mom-a win on both departments -plus the hair coat on all the animals will shine and perhaps less fly's.
Rebreeding that 1st calf heifer-(with good body condition) will set you up for the next turn-best of luck | |
