In the 1930´ies 30 % of Europes grain crop was eaten by the horses. Add to that grass and beets also used for horses.

My dad calculated and wrote down all figures and I still have them. Here is an example: In the war year 1943 he farmed 122 ha. The field work was done by his 10/20 International tractor, that ran on wood smoke and the horses. That year the horses ate the entire grain crop, which was oats, from 5.5 ha. That totalled 24.3 tons. On top of that fresh grass during summer and hay during winter and a little beets.

In grain alone for the horses it added up to 4.5 % of the cropped acreage. Add to that the grass, beets and the birch wood for the tractor and a guy might find the fuel expense for farming is lower today than back then.
