scmn | Sounds like not enough grain. FWIW 700# is light for a 12m Holstein and at only 7#/day the grain is only 1%bw, should be closer to 18-20# grain + 2# roughage at 700#. Its going to take around 420-450 days at 3% bw of grain to hit prime on a Holstein.
IMHO the lack of grain caused the meat to take on the flavor of the hay. It is said when dairies used to turn the cows out on pasture in the Spring that the milk would take on a grassy flavor; the same thing happened here. | |
