My best covers in corn was seeding around v3-v4, by the time the corn canopy covered them they were bg enough to survive, put in oats and hairy vetch as well, at harvest time the radish bulbs weren't that big, but the veggitive growth wad great, oat was a 10 inch tall grass.

I could have gotten a 3 inch rain on that field and two days later drove the pickup out there! It didn't dry my soil, it opened it up, added a lot of infiltration and fixed compaction.
