CD/DVD drives have not been readily available on laptop computers for quite a while now.  The majority of software is delivered via the internet and sometimes via USB drive.  My son built a desktop PC in January and did not put a disc drive in it and has no need for it.  I'd reconsider your aversion to not keeping your record keeping PC connected to the internet and instead look into a cloud based backup system to back your data up with.  Your risk of data loss with a "homebrew" backup system is significantly higher that the chance of your data being hijacked.
