Pretty much any computer will do what it did at the time you bought it indefinitely. The applications and even operating system get more and more advanced with time. These advances generally require more computing power. It is not so much that your computer is declining in power it is that the programs require more power over time because of the features and stuff they add. Apple seems to fare better in this regard than windows pcs but still over time the newer versions of their software will require more power and will run slowly on an older machine.

Think of it like tractors. When you buy an average sized one it will pull the average sized equipment being used at that time. Years down the road when people are using wider equipment your tractor will struggle to pull it though it will pull the equipment it did when you bought it just fine.
